Hawaii December 2013 Last Day

Spend the last day on Maui with Pat and Paul  We went over to Lahainna to show them around.  I bought some really cool custom made sandals that are custom fit to my feel.  It seems that the directions on how to wear them are pretty complex and that if I do not learn how to properly lace them and wear them they will not perform well.  I was talking with the sandal maker and told him that I have a problem finding shoes with arch support.  He explained that shoes with arch support do a lot of damage to the foot.  That we were made to walk on pours surfaces like sand and dirt.

Here is the site for the sandal maker

He spent a lot of time showing me how the laces work and how laces sandals as a shoe work.  I can’t wait to start wearing them and feeling how they feel on me feet at the beach next year.

After the shoe place I stopped in where Esty works for one last goodbye prior to leaving the island and she was not working.  We then headed off to Kihei for some tacos at Coconuts in Kihei, then we went and picked up Pat and Paul’s car at the rental place.  Then to the Maui Sunseeker to get them checked into the hotel.  The owner of the Sunseeker is doing a great job on the hotel and I was very impressed with the changes.  We sat around in the hot tub at the Maui Sunseeker for a few hours prior to dinner, then off to Sansei for dinner.  We met up with Don and his son and Lisa.  It was a great dinner, then it was off to the airport to turn in the car.  My flight was at midnight, and this was the first time I have flown a red-eye flight.  I would imagine that I will just sleep and wake up in Portland.   Not a bad deal…  Well this is the last post of the vacation….   What a great relaxing time with Brit, Jeff, Conor, Esty, Pat and Paul and Don.

Hawaii December 2013 Day Eleven

Today was another great day on the island of Maui.  Jeff and I hung around the pool and waited for Esty and Conor to come over from Lahainna.  They arrived and we had lunch by the pool then went over to Kamaole (Kam) One for some sun.  We enjoyed some cocktails on the beach.  Conor and I swam some and Esty and Conor played some football on the beach.

For sunset we sent over to Don Grasso’s father in law’s condo for some cocktails. The grounds of the place were spectacular and the Mai taos were world class.  Don is such a great host.   Esty, Conor, Jeff, Scott, Scott and Fred had a great time catching up and watching the sunset.

Hawaii December 2013 Day Ten Brittany’s last day

Woke up and had coffee in the sun. Scott and I wrote in our ‘heart books’ to each other, and Jeff let me open my Christmas gift early. It was a glorious  way to start out my last day in Maui. We packed our bags and were off to Little Beach. On the way we stopped in at the ABC store and got wraps and chips and other delicious snacks.  Scott and Jeff made two gallons of delicious POG, Rum, Coco Rum, OJ, cranberry drinks and put them into frozen containers.  They went way too quickly on the beach (note to self…   More drinks…   More frozen containers…  )

After the long hike down to little beach, we settled in for a great day by the beach.

Echo and Bobbie ended up settling in next to us and played guitar and ukelele.  Esty and Conor were not too far behind them and joined us in our ‘normal’ spot under the tree on the beach. Laughter, drinks, pictures and a lot of sun and waves we were all in great spirits enjoying our day. The sunset was one to remember, with the whole family there, listening to the ukeleles and taking multiple pictures to capture the moments.

Scott, Jeff, Conor and myself headed back to the hotel to shower and get dressed for dinner. We met Esty and her date, Garrett Probst a 3 time emmy award winner for best music in Hawaii.

We were seated around a grill, and ordered multiple orders of Kinky Sake. Some of the best entertainment, and amazing food we shared between us 6, (oh and these 2 other people that were pretty annoying) We quoted movies, shared stories, basically anything to find a reason to pour more sake and cheers!

From there, Scott, Jeff, Conor and I took the long drive back to our hotel.  Conor and Jeff pretty much know every line form Step Brothers.  It was hilarious…

Conor and I were not yet ready to settle in for the night and we decided that we were going to grab a towel and head down to the beach for some midnight swimming.  The waves were gorgeous and huge, making sounds of crashing thunder as the rolled from one side of the beach to the other. Conor and I saw a fisherman ‘chumming’ down by ocean shinning his light back and forth to try to catch fish. Returning back to the hotel at 4:30am, Conor and I crashed, thankful for the beautiful day and night.

So long Hawaii.  Today may be my last night here in Paradise, but I look forward to my return to the beautiful island of Hawaii.

Til next time..

Hawaii December 2013 Day Nine

Got the beach bags together this AM and headed down to Little Beach for some fun in the sun.

The shores of Kam 1, Kam2 and Kam3 were all closed due to dangerous shore breaks, so by the time we arrived the parking lot was pretty full.  We hiked on down to the beach and Big Beach was open as well as Little Beach.  The waves were HUGE!!!

There were about 40 guys on the waves at all times and they were having a great day on the water.  It was the most active I have ever seen the beach.

We wrapped up the day at the beach, came back to the Timeshare and then drove over to meet up with Esty and Conor.  They have been hanging out in Lahainna and catching up.  We then drove back to our Timeshare and decorated the lanai with xmas lights and tinsel.  It is pretty fun!

Hawaii December 2013 Day Eight

We got up in the AM and hung around the Timeshare in anticipation of Jeff and Connor arriving in from Portland.  It has been a week since I saw Jeff and he was missed very much.  Esty called and was going to meet us at the Timeshare, but we decided to meet up at the Airport.

Jeff and Conor arrived on time and we went to Marcos for Lunch.  Then Esty and Connor were off to Lahaina for a party and Brit, Jeff and I came back to the timeshare and then off to the Kam 1 Beach to celebrate the sunset

First Sunset

Then we were off to McGillacuddy’s for dinner.

Tres Amigos Hawaii

Then back to the Timeshare for a few games for Rummikub.

A pretty laid back and relaxing day.  Tomorrow will be a beach day… YAY!!

Hawaii December 2013 Day Seven

Today was just a lazy day in Hawaii.  No sharks, No driving around the one lane roads.  Just Perfect Hawaii Beach time.

Brittany and I went down to Little Beach and stayed until sunset.  Then back to the hotel, and then to Moose McGillacuddies for dinner.  I had the fish and chips and she had a burger.  It was Burger Weds, so her burger was 6.95!!

Now for a couple of rounds of Rummikub.  Brit is not exactly winning at the game.  She has had to buy dinner two nights in a row due to her losses   (I am OK with that  <eg>  )

Hawaii December 2013 Day Six

Woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the smell of coffee freshly brewed in the kitchen. Poured a cup of coffee and went out on the lani to watch the birds play and our neighbors wake from their slumber. We decided over coffee and conversation, that we were going to take a road trip out to the North side of the island and sight see. Making sure that we had our bags packed and swimsuits on, just incase we found a place to swim, we headed off.

The first stop was Iao Valley State Park in a gorgeous canyon filled with greenery and scenic views. We parked and started our journey up the paths to  multiple different views and even a few family burial sites where there were offerings all around. We saw multiple families on the same scenic journey, and couple bathing and basking in the sun and water. It was a beautiful hike with great conversation and wonderful pictures.

From there we went to the park and had a picnic lunch with the sandwiches that we made earlier in the morning. We saw koi ponds, and statues all dedicated to Hawaiian, Japanese, and English heritage that impacted the Hawaiian culture.  It was interesting to see the differing architecture between the Japanese, Portugese, Chinese and other cultures that make up the native Hawaiian culture.

From there we took the long journey around the north side of the island following a curvy one lane road that resembled ‘The Road to Hana’.  Full, luscious greenery was what we were viewing for at least 50 miles. We stopped at a local  artist named Turnbull’s shop and purchased four pieces of art each for our houses and then journeyed on further.  We found another small shop and had to kill 1 hour prior to the road opening up.  It was closed until 4:30 for construction.  At the little shop,  we bought paintings, post cards, and gifts. One of the shops had amazing art, jewelry, ornaments, and trinkets. One of Brittany’s favorites were these ‘mini’ paintings on canvas.

She suggested to Scott that we get them and place them by our beds to wake up every morning and think of each other. He laughed and stated that he already does that, and thinks of me when he wakes. Our favorites were the painted scenic view that we had just taken, and Scott’s church that he had previously taken a picture of when he was in Maui in September. (this will be important to know for day seven)

The road was closed to non locals due to new pavement along the road and we had to wait until after 4:30pm to pass by the road work. To let time pass, we shopped and took pictures of the surounding scenic views while hydrating with water and eating grapes. One of the locals had a few choice words with an other non-local, and we chose to sit back and follow suit, and wait patiently for the road to open. Once the road opened we started our journey back to Lahaina for some appetizers and cocktails.  We got some great pictures along the way.

We texted Esty and asked if she and her friend would like to join, and they were on their way surfing at another beach. (only in Maui is that a good reason to not drink and eat) Our choice of food to eat, which was lettuce wraps, sent us to a restaurant that was closed for their employee holiday party so we chose to go next door to Koa’s.   The view was amazing.  We watched the sunset over Moloki Island and took some ‘Weezees’. We both ordered blended drinks (on accident) grilled auhi,  coconut prawns, and spinach dip. With our stomachs full and hearts filled we took off for coconuts for fish and chips (yes for dinner). Two pieces of fish, fries, and clam chowder shared.

We then needed to go to Longs Drugs  to get lotion and in search of new games. When we went into Longs Drugs we both came to the conclusion that they must have mopped the entire store with a dirty mop from the bathroom.   Because the whole store smelled like Human Piss.  We looked around for what seemed to be an eternity in smelly shopping doom, we chose not to buy there and went to Safeway. We bought nuts and lotion for our beach trip the next day.  Then back to the Timeshare.

Ending the night with cocktails, rummikub, and self pictures in the hat that Brittany found that day, Brittany and Scott laid their heads to rest and dreamed of seeing more sunsets and of their adventures for tomorrow.IMG_0191 IMG_0196 IMG_0194

Day Six was a blast!

Hawaii December 2013 Day Five

Woke up this morning and heated up some coffee from yesterday.  Just too relaxed to make a fresh pot, plus 33 seconds later I had coffee and Baileys!!!   Vacation really is all about instant gratification isn’t it?  I went through some old blogs this AM and found that I had not posted some days from some previous vacations.  One is an interesting post from me sitting in the Airport in December 2012, my second Hawaii xmas trip.  I will post later; as not to confuse you all.

The days sure are flying by on this vacation.  I have finally started to relax a bit and get into my vacation mode.  It takes me about 5 days to get relaxed and not feel like I am on a schedule, or have to be doing something.  Something in the body changes a bit when you actually have no plans.  You are no longer planning your next move, and get comfortable with just sitting and thinking and letting your mind wonder a bit.  It is a great feeling to just lay in bed or sit in a chair on the beach and not being strategic about your next move or worrying about what you are going to be doing in 2 hours.

Well it is now 7:37AM on Day 5.  The sky is crystal clear blue and no storm clouds in the sky at all.  I think I will go do loud things outside of Brittany’s door to see if I can get her up.   (just kidding)

Off to Little Beach.

images 2

Stopped in at Subway, got a sandwich and were on the beach by 11am.  Took two swims, and as we got out the second time…  We heard it.

Duna…  Duna.   Duna…   Duna Duna Duna Duna Duna…   SHARK.

images

Yep.  A 7 foot shark cleared everyone out of the water.  Everyone stood and pointed and yelled to the just snorkeling 40 yards out in the water.  Gary got some pix.  Not very good ones now that I see them on the computer.  But the shark was huge…

Here is some information about shark sightings in Hawaii

Then the Whale show started.  Around sunset we saw our fifth breach of the day, then they were non-stop until after sunset.  It was so cool to see them spouting and full breaching.

After the beach we came back to the hotel, showered and had dinner at Cafe’ Ole, then had cocktails at Life’s a beach.

All is all a great day…  Or as Brittany said “Her favorite day so far”

Signed…  B&S

Here are some of the whale breach pix.  They were hard to shoot on the phone.  You can see the tufts of water and they appeared to happen in puffs of three, or a breech and a puff.  It was really cool to see the whales playing during sunset off of Little Beach.

Hawaii December 2013 Day Four

We were going to go to Little Beach again today, but decided instead to go look for some art in Lahaina and drive the North shore of Maui.  We started in the galleries of Lahainna and just didn’t get any further.  So much great art to see and buy.  Scott bought some old canvas maps and some movie posters with celebrities.  Brittany purchased some scenic beach scenes.  All four and beautiful sunset photos.

We stopped in on Esty at work and said hello.  Brit really liked a right hand ring that Esty had on display.  It was great seeing Esty, she looked great.  She has a friend in town from the mainland, so we hope to see more of Esty when Jeff arrives, and her friend is off Island.

It occurred to us that there is no name for a selfie that contains two or more people.  We we submitted Weezee to Urban Dictionary.

Weezee: A picture taken of two or more people that is planned to be uploaded to a social social networking website. You can usually see the person’s arm holding out the camera in which case you can clearly tell that this person does not have any friends to take pictures of them so they resort to Myspace to find internet friends and post pictures of themselves, taken by themselves. This is similar to a selfie, which only contains one person.  See Selfie

Screen Shot 2013-12-15 at 7.18.16 PM

We took several Weezees today.  One of my favorites was the one we took in the market squares.

Here is one that was taken at Mick Fleetwoods Restaurant on Front Street.  They have the most delicious french fries.

Brit and Scott at Fleetwoods

While we were in one of the little shops in Lahainna, we came across the picture frame below.  It is a picture of Kim McDonald.  When I asked the lady at the counter, she said it was a picture they cut out of a magazine and put in the frame.  I thought it was funny that Kim was in the frame.

IMG_0007

After Lahainna, Brit and I came back to the timeshare to take a short nap.  We both woke up after sunset and totally missed Day 4 sunset.  Bummer…

We poured a couple pre-dinner cocktails.  I think we like this one…

Hawaii December 2013 Day Three

Saturday began with coffee, then we were off to Paia.   We parked where Esty showed me on my last trip and walked toward the shops.

We visited Maui Hands, one of my favorite shops.  I have bought a bunch of Kim McDonald stuff there, and it is always fresh with her work.

If you have not seen Kim’s work, check out http://www.kimmcdonald.com.  She is an amazing artist..

moon-light-sail.jpg

Brit fell in love with a piece of art that is painted on metal and is now on a mission to acquire.  We then went to the corner Tex Mex restaurant and had lunch.  We started off with a Tequila Bloody Mary and mine was a traditional BM.  We ordered food and we spilt an order of Chicken Enchiladas and Pork Quesadillas.  The food was amazing.

We then ventured to more of the stores, but our hearts were really set on more of the warm sun.

After leaving Paia,  we went and saw the surfers, such an experience.  From previous trips, it is amazing to watch them through a zoom lens camera.  It is just like they are in front of you, and you are in the water with them.

From there we went back to Kihei and to Kam One beach right by the Worldmark where we are staying and set up ‘camp’.  We watched families play, children laugh, read books, and we shared some drinks.  There was a particular father and son (with down syndrome) that caught our eyes…  such a gift both of them were.  They had such a great connection.  The boy hung on his dad’s every word and they had such a great day.  What a gift to both Scott and I.

Scott and I exchanged sun glasses, I like his better and Scott likes mine better….so we were happy. We visited the water more than a dozen times, and played ‘3 people’ (if you want to know the rules just ask). Got some great sun, and had a ball…life can’t get any better…..off to sushi and Sansei!

Sansei for dinner is always a fun experience.  We had the Miso Butterfish for an appetizer and some sushi rolls.   Afterwards it was off to “Life’s a Beach”, a local pub and they had a bunch of people dressed up in Santa costumes on a bar crawl.  Ecko and Ben played a game of pool, then were off to another bar.

Lifes a Beach

Brit and I headed back to the hotel after the bar.  I was tired and in bed by 11.  Brit stayed up and caught up with friends on the phone and online.

Aloha,

Brittany and Scott
