Woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the smell of coffee freshly brewed in the kitchen. Poured a cup of coffee and went out on the lani to watch the birds play and our neighbors wake from their slumber. We decided over coffee and conversation, that we were going to take a road trip out to the North side of the island and sight see. Making sure that we had our bags packed and swimsuits on, just incase we found a place to swim, we headed off.
The first stop was Iao Valley State Park in a gorgeous canyon filled with greenery and scenic views. We parked and started our journey up the paths to multiple different views and even a few family burial sites where there were offerings all around. We saw multiple families on the same scenic journey, and couple bathing and basking in the sun and water. It was a beautiful hike with great conversation and wonderful pictures.

This is the tree we ate lunch next to in the park
From there we went to the park and had a picnic lunch with the sandwiches that we made earlier in the morning. We saw koi ponds, and statues all dedicated to Hawaiian, Japanese, and English heritage that impacted the Hawaiian culture. It was interesting to see the differing architecture between the Japanese, Portugese, Chinese and other cultures that make up the native Hawaiian culture.
From there we took the long journey around the north side of the island following a curvy one lane road that resembled ‘The Road to Hana’. Full, luscious greenery was what we were viewing for at least 50 miles. We stopped at a local artist named Turnbull’s shop and purchased four pieces of art each for our houses and then journeyed on further. We found another small shop and had to kill 1 hour prior to the road opening up. It was closed until 4:30 for construction. At the little shop, we bought paintings, post cards, and gifts. One of the shops had amazing art, jewelry, ornaments, and trinkets. One of Brittany’s favorites were these ‘mini’ paintings on canvas.
She suggested to Scott that we get them and place them by our beds to wake up every morning and think of each other. He laughed and stated that he already does that, and thinks of me when he wakes. Our favorites were the painted scenic view that we had just taken, and Scott’s church that he had previously taken a picture of when he was in Maui in September. (this will be important to know for day seven)
The road was closed to non locals due to new pavement along the road and we had to wait until after 4:30pm to pass by the road work. To let time pass, we shopped and took pictures of the surounding scenic views while hydrating with water and eating grapes. One of the locals had a few choice words with an other non-local, and we chose to sit back and follow suit, and wait patiently for the road to open. Once the road opened we started our journey back to Lahaina for some appetizers and cocktails. We got some great pictures along the way.
We texted Esty and asked if she and her friend would like to join, and they were on their way surfing at another beach. (only in Maui is that a good reason to not drink and eat) Our choice of food to eat, which was lettuce wraps, sent us to a restaurant that was closed for their employee holiday party so we chose to go next door to Koa’s. The view was amazing. We watched the sunset over Moloki Island and took some ‘Weezees’. We both ordered blended drinks (on accident) grilled auhi, coconut prawns, and spinach dip. With our stomachs full and hearts filled we took off for coconuts for fish and chips (yes for dinner). Two pieces of fish, fries, and clam chowder shared.
We then needed to go to Longs Drugs to get lotion and in search of new games. When we went into Longs Drugs we both came to the conclusion that they must have mopped the entire store with a dirty mop from the bathroom. Because the whole store smelled like Human Piss. We looked around for what seemed to be an eternity in smelly shopping doom, we chose not to buy there and went to Safeway. We bought nuts and lotion for our beach trip the next day. Then back to the Timeshare.
Ending the night with cocktails, rummikub, and self pictures in the hat that Brittany found that day, Brittany and Scott laid their heads to rest and dreamed of seeing more sunsets and of their adventures for tomorrow.
Day Six was a blast!
